Launching an OffShore Wind Department

Client: Arup

Company Background

Arup is an international engineering consultancy with offices in thirty-three different countries. It is a market leader in providing technical consultancy expertise within critical infrastructure markets, most notably energy, which is where we have provided real value.

The Challenge

Present in emerging and ever-changing markets with numerous competing consultancies, Arup operates in areas where candidates are in high demand yet expertise is in short supply. Additionally, given its niche focus, Arup isn’t as well-known as many of its competitors in the US. This means that there’s often the need to educate candidates to reassure them and excite them about the opportunity. We began working with Arup in the US to help them fill a new role for the business:  Head of Offshore Wind. Arup wanted to create a reputation as the leading consultancy in this area. Offshore wind is a relatively new industry to the US, and as a result, the role was extremely niche as it required a blend of business development, project delivery, strategic leadership expertise, and an individual that the company could build a department under.

What Happened Next?

Given the nature of the search, Consult Energy immediately mapped out the market, both for key competitors and leading industry developers, and built a relevant talent pool. From there, we proactively networked and selectively headhunted key industry individuals for the candidate shortlist. This process took just three weeks from the point when the role was taken on.

The Result

All five of the shortlisted candidates were interviewed, which meant 100% of the provided candidates were selected for the interview process. Three candidates were put through the second stage, and within two weeks from the shortlist review, the successful candidate was offered and accepted. The strength of the shortlist meant that the second placed candidate was regarded highly enough to be recommended to other areas of the business in the event of another role opening up.
