Growing a PV Design team through diverse hires

Client : Standard Solar

Company Background

Standard Solar is an industry-leading commercial and community scale solar developer and EPC going through a huge period of growth following a serious injection of financial backing.

The challenge

It is well known that within traditionally, the renewable industry has lacked female and diverse voices however it is something that many are looking to change. Standard Solar looked to Consult Energy to address this whilst also looking to significantly growth their engineering team as they targeted a number of new diverse hires.

This brought about two challenges; the first being, the candidate must have PV design experience (not easy in itself), and the second was finding a candidate who was qualified in this area, but also who was a diverse hire.

What happened next?

What sets us apart as a company is our strong talent pool of candidates that we’re able to tap into, but also our ability to go out and headhunt the best talent out there. We recognised early on that this hire would only be someone in a position now so set about proactively headhunting experienced candidates from industry competitors, initially locally and then to surrounding states. In a pretty static market, it required significant outreach and over 200 screening calls but we were able to build a significant pool of qualified, diverse talent – all with solar PV design expertise and whose motivations really aligned with what Standard Solar were looking for.

The result

In all, 14 highly screened, qualified candidates were submitted to standard solar, 100% of which were interviewed and 7 of which were hired. All were diverse hires.
