Building a Project Development Team

Client: C-TEC Solar

Background:  C-TEC Solar is a leading tier two renewable developer. It is headquartered in Connecticut and focuses on the C&I and utility scale solar markets.

The Challenge

Being well set-up and financially backed, we started working with C-TEC Solar in late 2020. Their targets consisted of a period of business growth, hiring a lead developer and a project estimator to effectively originate, appropriately cost, and develop solar projects across the North East. Both of these roles required substantial knowledge of the North East solar market. These are both skill sets that are in high demand, but low in quality candidates with the necessary background and knowledge.

What Happened next?

Working closely with the CEO, we were able to tap into our strong developer talent pool and line up a shortlist of development candidates within just three days. However, we quickly recognised creativity was required to source relevant estimating candidates. Experienced estimators were coming from adjoining industries - like transmission - and therefore lacked the essential solar industry knowledge. They also came in way above budget. At Consult Energy, we changed tactics and pivoted towards bright, enthusiastic candidates with the financial acumen and the necessary solar industry experience to be successful. We also initially introduced flexible working to attract the best possible talent pool.

The Result

The result culminated in hiring developers and estimators, both of which have played key parts in the origination and bidding on various successful projects and remain at the business one year on. Consult Energy is a UK recruitment consultancy that specialises in the energy and utilities sectors. We aim to provide a best in class recruitment solution for all customers, helping companies grow by delivering the best possible service, selection and quality.
